MIND THE GAP
thoughts from underground
In 1974 I, a still-wet-behind-the-ears fresh graduate from Bangalore, marched into a tribal village in rural Bihar armed with little else than a mix of Marxian analysis and liberation theology. Unjust economic structures had to be changed, wealth re-distributed, poverty eradicated. The revolution seemed to be lurking around the corner. Thirty five years on the revolution has not happened. But we have been privileged to be part of a journey that has contributed to making people’s lives better. In 1984 my wife Mari and I moved into the Nilgiris to work with the adivasis. Over the years we were joined by many others and working closely with the adivasi community have learned many lessons which we have shared in a variety of ways – talks, workshops, articles etc. While Mari has done most of the writing, I have tended to give talks and participate in seminars and conferences. We even flirted with academia. But all this meant loads of travel – something that’s no longer sustainable.
So have decided to tap into technology to continue to share our experiences, thoughts and concerns from working on the ground without having to catch a bus, train or aeroplane!! What fun…
Hope you enjoy this blog as much as I hope to…
